New Orlando Pirates signing Abel Mabaso sees himself fitting in as a midfielder at the club, despite playing most of his professional career as a defender.
Mabaso was promoted to the senior team at Mamelodi Sundowns as a midfielder, but was used in various positions in defence at the club, and also during his loan spells at Mpumalanga Black Aces, Maritzburg United and Ajax Cape Town.

He made a permanent move to Chippa United and was used as a midfielder by coach Teboho Moloi, becoming one of the club’s top performing players.
As the side’s anchorman, Mabaso finished the season with four goals and two assists in 32 appearances.
Now a Pirates player, Mabaso will have tough competition to get a spot in midfield, competing with the likes of Musa Nyatama, Ben Motshwari and Xola Mlambo. But he’s ready for the challenge.
“Central midfield, that’s my original position. A lot of people don’t know that I was actually promoted as a midfielder, not as a right back,” Mabaso tells KickOff.com.
“At that time at Sundowns all the right backs were injured and they asked me to play at right back. I did well and it stuck with me since then, but growing up I was always a midfielder, even in the Sundowns development. I am just happy that I am in my strongest position.”
