Russia edge closer to WC last 16

Russia edged closer to a spot in the World Cup last 16 after overcoming Egypt 3-1 in their second Group A clash at the Krestovsky Stadium on Tuesday.

Egypt were caught out early on two successive occasions but were riding their luck as both scenarios saw them go unpunished, with Aleksandr Golovin fumbling the clearest of the chances.

The Pharaohs soon got into gear and a curling effort from Trezeguet flashed agonisingly wide of the upright on 15 minutes.

Salah’s first sight on goal came four minutes to halftime as he shot wide on the turn from the edge of the area.

The Egyptians were handed a sucker punch a minute after the restart as captain Ahmed Fathi guided the ball into his own net to put the home nation 1-0 up.

Russia made it 2-0 after a cross-field pass on the right found Denis Cheryshev, who comfortably tucked home at the near post on 60 minutes.

It got worse for the Pharaohs minutes later as Artem Dzyuba brought the ball down on his chest to beat his marker before finishing off with a neatly placed goal into the bottom corner.

Egypt earned themselves a penalty 20 minutes from time after Salah was hacked down, with the Liverpool striker picking himself up before smashing the ball into the net to reduce the deficit.

Unfortunately, that’s where it all ended for the Egyptians, who went down for the successive time in Group A to leave their tournament hanging by a thread.

Russia sit top of Group A with six, while a victory for Uruguay against Saudi Arabia on Wednesday will confirm Egypt's exit.
