New Al Ahly coach Patrice Carteron has confirmed having received an offer from Kaizer Chiefs, while also revealing interest from Mamelodi Sundowns.
Carteron had been a reported target of Amakhosi in recent weeks, and was believed to have been contacted by the club to see whether he could replace the departed Steve Komphela ahead of the new season.
However, the French tactician opted instead for a move to the Egyptian giants, whose head coach Hossam El Badry quit following their shock CAF Champions League defeat to Ugandan side Kampala City last month.
The 47-year-old, who was previously managing USL club Phoenix Rising where Didier Drogba and South African midfielder Miguel Timm are plying their trade, says he snubbed offers from both Amakhosi and The Brazilians.
“I am very happy to sign with Al Ahly, which is African football’s giant. I am still young, but I possess great experience I earned through my spells with TP Mazembe and Wadi Degla,” Carteron said, according to KingFut.com.
“Negotiations were finalised rapidly. I will fight in order to lead Al Ahly to win titles and make the fans happy. I committed to my word with the Red Devils and terminated my deal with Phoenix Rising by mutual consent.
"I had other offers from [Mamelodi] Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, but the priority was definitely for Al Ahly.”
The former Lyon defender is also optimistic he will be able to bring back the glory days to the Red Devils, who recently won the Egyptian Premier League for a third time in a row, but have not won the Champions League since 2013.
“I am certain that Al Ahly is not any less than Barcelona and Real Madrid. I will do my best to succeed, lift trophies and to always be on the podium," he added.
"I know everything about Egyptian football and I follow Al Ahly. My primary goal is to retrieve the team’s fighting spirit which has regressed recently.
“I would like to stress that I am proud to be a part of the Al Ahly family. I will fight to win as many titles as possible and get the players to give their best in each game.”
