Official: Spain sack Real Madrid-bound head coach Julen Lopetegui on eve of 2018 FIFA World Cup

Spain have announced their decision to sack Julen Lopetegui as head coach just a day before the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia begins.

Lopetegui was announced as the successor to Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid yesterday, which reportedly caused a stir with Royal Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales.

And barely 24 hours later, the decision was announced to relieve the former FC Porto manager from national team duties, after an unbeaten record over his two-year spell.

"We have to decided to fire the national coach. What we have achieved in getting here is due in great part to him, and we must thank him and wish him luck," he said in an official press conference, as quoted by The Guardian.

"The Spanish national team is the team of all the Spaniards. We only found out just five minutes before that he was leaving for Madrid.

"There is a way that you must act, Julen has worked in a great way with the team, but we cannot accept how he has acted in this case."
