Orlando Pirates have lined up opposition with a continental presence on their pre-season roster as they prepare for their return to the CAF Champions League next term.
The Buccaneers are set to host a training match against Swaziland giants Mbabane Swallows ahead of the 2018/19 campaign, during which they will also compete on the continent.
The fixture, which will be played at the club’s training base in Rosettenville in early July, has been confirmed by the club’s administrative manager Floyd Mbele.
“It’s a training match and not a friendly match. The match forms part of our preparations for the new season. It will be behind closed doors, so there won’t be any supporters,” Mbele told the Swazi Observer.
For Swallows, the match will serve as preparations for their ongoing Champions League group stage campaign, which will see them take on Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel on July 17.
The Birds are currently second in Group D – level on four points with Etoile – after two fixtures, with Zambian outfit ZESCO United and Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto on one point apiece.
Should they maintain their current standing, Swallows could potentially come up against South Africa’s only remaining representatives in this year’s competition Mamelodi Sundowns in the later stages of the competition, should The Brazilians progress from Group C.
Meanwhile, after a five-year absence, Pirates will re-enter the premier continental club competition for the 2018/19 edition, which will run from December to May next year as CAF looks to shift the tournament schedule to run from August to May for the 2019/20 season.
