Ajax, Sundowns share spoils

Posted: 12 December 2007 Time: 19:39

A late equaliser from Terror Fanteni helped Ajax Cape Town to a 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns in an Absa Premiership clash at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

1 min: And we're underway with Ajax kicking-off ...

2 mins: Surprise Moriri has the first shot of the night, but it goes high and wide from 30-yards.

3 mins: Sameehg Doutie forces a fine save from Calvin Marlin after he reacts quickest to the lose ball in the penalty area. Lively start from both teams.

7 mins Terror Fanteni, looking for one goal to become the club's all-time joint-top scorer with Brent Carelse on 32, tries an effort from 20-yards that fails to make Marlin work.

9 mins: Should have been 1-0. Russel Mwafurlirwa is put through one-on-one with keeper Marlin, but his first-time shot is brilliantly palmed around the post. He should have backed himself to take the ball round the keeper. Ajax have made by far the better start.

14 mins: Sundowns have come more into it in the last five minutes, but have yet to carve out a real chance.

19 mins: Eduardo Ferreira sends his free-kick for Ajax over Marlin's bar.

21 mins: Marlin is forced into more smart work as the impressive Mwafurlirwa breaks free on the right and tried to pick out a cross for Fanteni. Marlin gathers at the second attempt.

25 mins: Ajax are bossing the midfield and Enoh has a shot charged down as the hosts press for the opener.

31 mins: GOAL! Against the run of play, Peter Ndlovu beats the offside trap and easily rounds keeper Vonk to give the visitors the lead with their first real effort on goal.

34 mins: Ajax look a little shell-shocked to be behind after all their possession and shots on goal, but I guess that's why Sundowns are champions.

39 mins: Esrom Nyandoro gets a YELLOW CARD for a late challenge on Mfundo Shumana. He can have no complaints.

42 mins: Josta Dladla gets behind his marker to head Moriri's cross from ddep, but his effort goes wide.

44 mins: Marlin makes an excellent stop from Fanteni, who spins away from his marker but can't beat the keeper.

HALFTIME: Ajax will wonder how they have gone into halftime behind after dominating the possession and goal chances. But for the keeping of Marlin they would have had some reward but as it stands they are headed for two defeats in a row.

46 mins: We're underway with the second half ... no changes at the break from either coach.

49 mins: Some sloppy play from Ajax at the back gives Sundowns a corner, but it leads to nothing.

51 mins: Ndlovu gets free of his marker, but his shot from 25-yards is always going wide. Seconds later he tries a volley from about the penalty-spot which is brilliantly tipped over by Vonk.

52 mins: Ferreira heads over from the corner when he might have at least hit the target.

54 mins: Enoh, who has been oustanding today, gets a YELLOW CARD as he clatters into Moriri.

56 mins: Grandwald Scott comes on for Jonathan Fransman as Ajax make their first change.

57 mins: Dikilu Bageta gets a YELLOW CARD for an ugly challenge on Ndlovu.

60 mins: Nazeer Allie comes on for Doutie. Presumably Bryce Moon will switch to rightwing from the fullback position.

65 mins: The game has become a bit disjointed with Ajax showing plenty of urgency, but no end product.

71 mins: Sundowns bring on Jorge Acuna for Moriri, while Ajax replace Mwafurlirwa with Nathan Paulse.

73 mins: Moon's corner-kick comes back off the woodwork and is cleared behind. Second time round Ferreira gets his head to the ball but Marlin saves.

78 mins: Fanteni goes down in the area and the crowd bay for a penalty, but referee Lwandile Mfiki is having none of it and says play on. Interestingly he fails to produce a card for simulation, so presumably he thought it was an accidental clash.

80 mins: Goalscorer Ndlovu is replaced by Shakes Ngwenya for the last 10 minutes.

85 mins: Paulse hits the upright as his looping header beats Marlin and Vuto Mere clears off the line from the resulting corner. That's twice the Urban Warriors have hit the woodwork.

88 mins: GOAL! Fanteni gets his record-equalling goal after a terrible slip by Oscar Ntwagae puts him clear on Marlin, who cannot keep him at bay. It may have been a terrible defensive error, but Ajax deserve that equaliser for their second-half display.

90 mins: Paulse almost wins it for the home side but his header is well saved by Marlin.

92 mins: Vonk turns the ball over from Benson Mhlongo's header.

95 mins: And that's it. Sundowns should view this as a point gained, rather than two lost after weathering the Ajax storm in the second half. They have at least halted their run of four defeats against the Urban Warriors, but it hasn't helped their title bid much.
