This could spell further bad news for Lucky Mohomi, who has struggled to break into the starting line-up in the last two seasons.

But Downs coach Pitso Mosimane has encouraged the midfielder to continue fighting for a place in the team with the likes of Oupa Manyisa, Hlompho Kekana and Tiyani Mabunda.

“There will be four in the midfield. Mohomi will have to compete. It is dog-eat-dog, you have to make it,” Mosimane says.

“You can go to Pirates, there is Issa Sarr, there is everybody there in the middle of the park. So who is not going to play?”

Meanwhile, Mosimane says the Brazilians are also looking for young talent in the transfer market.

“We want the younger ones and we have signed Katlego Otladisa from Platinum Stars, he is young.

“There is another one we are looking at, we all know him, he is hot property. He is young, he is 21.

“There is a 23-year-old also on the table that we will like to bring [in], national team material players.

“Also, it is important to respect the other teams if they are willing to sell. It is no longer like before where we were saying we are paying, we will give you money.

“Teams are saying, we don't want to get relegated, we want to stay top and we don't want to lose our players.

“But it is also up to the player, because you can't keep an unhappy player. You can say he's got a contract, but then what happens?

“I think you know players who refused to renew their contracts and clubs say you don't go. But at the end does the club benefit?

“We can easily do that with Khama [Billiat] and we don't win the league and you start regretting.”
