Fortune Makaringe concedes Bafana Bafana debut against Madagascar was bitter-sweet

Maritzburg United midfielder Fortune Makaringe has reflected on his Bafana Bafana debut, in which he also bagged the man-of-the-match award.

Makaringe made his first senior international appearance over the weekend as Bafana suffered a bitter 4-3 defeat on penalties to minnows Madagascar in their COSAFA Cup quarterfinal.

The 25-year-old attacker, who was an integral part to Maritzburg's recent historic season, continued his fine showing as he was named the stand-out player in the 0-0 draw during regulation time.

However, the team's sudden-death defeat and subsequent elimination from the cup came as a dampener on his career milestone.

“It was a great feeling [to have made my debut] despite the fact that we lost. It would have been more meaningful though if we won the game, especially after the team played so well as a collective,” Makaringe told SAFA.

“[The man-of-the-match accolade] is all credit to the whole team, I would not have done it alone. They complimented me whenever I was doing something right, so all credit goes to the entire team.”

South Africa now fall into the plate section of the tournament, and will face Namibia in their semi-final on Tuesday evening (17h00) at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Makaringe is naturally disappointed by their defeat as tournament hosts, but calls on his teammates to rise to the occasion as they gun for the plate honours.

“It is a huge loss bearing in mind that we are the hosts and much is expected from us. So it is a very difficult thing for the entire team that we lost,” said Makaringe.

“We are all professionals. We have to encourage one another and keep our heads up, and if we don’t do that we will be in trouble again and suffer another loss [against Namibia].”
