Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder George Lebese is relishing the experience of travelling into Africa with the Brazilians after doing very little of it at his previous club.

Lebese joined Sundowns at the start of last season, midway through their CAF Champions League campaign in which he featured in the quarter-final second leg defeat to eventual winners Wydad Casablanca.

After nine years at Kaizer Chiefs, where he managed only a handful of continental club competition appearances, the 29-year-old says he is experiencing the continent like never before at his new club, and is honoured to be a part of the journey.

“Being part of the Champions League is a great feeling. It’s the biggest club tournament in Africa, so to be part of it is an honour,” said Lebese.

“To be travelling with the team and being part of the experience is something that I wasn’t really experiencing at my previous club. So now it’s really an honour and I’m grateful for the opportunity to rub shoulders with great African players.”

This year, Lebese has experienced the campaign from the start and is learning the ropes as to how to deal with the conditions, but is excited about playing a bigger role in the team going forward.

“The hardest part is adjusting to the travelling and the conditions that we encounter but when it comes to the games, you see the level of support in other countries and it’s really amazing,” he explained.

“When I first got into the team, my first Champions League game was in the quarter-final, so that was huge and it was a great experience. I couldn’t wait for the next campaign to start.

“So, to be going through the full journey now, I’m really happy to be a part of it.”

Sundowns resume their Champions League group stage campaign with a trip to AS Togo-Port on July 17.
