Maritzburg United attacker Lebohang Maboe targets overseas move

Maritzburg United attacker Lebohang Maboe has sets his sights on playing overseas rather than joining a big club in the PSL.

Maboe shone this past season as he helped Maritzburg to a best-ever fourth place finish in the league and a maiden Nedbank Cup final appearance.

His efforts didn't go unnoticed, as he was named the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament and the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player at the annual PSL awards ceremony at the Sandton Convention Centre on Tuesday.

“I want to go overseas, I don't have that [playing for a big team] in my mind right now. Me making it overseas, that's what I'm thinking,” Maboe said.

“I still got a contract with Maritzburg United and I still have to honour that, and I will still be with the team if I don't get something overseas.

“Overseas is where I want to go from here, now I don't have anything concrete.”

The 23-year-old credited hard work for his and the team’s outstanding campaign.

“Most importantly I feel like it was hard work. We had to put in a lot of hard work throughout the season. And us being united, I feel that also worked for us.”

Maboe also explained his link up play with teammates Siphesihle Ndlovu and Fortune Makaringe is aided by their friendship off the park.

“Our relationship goes outside the footballing field. We hang around quite a lot so we understand one another. Even before sessions with us we are meddling against each other.

“That also helps to improve the team ethics. It goes beyond the field I will say.”
