Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has conceded that it may be the right time to allow forward Percy Tau to spread his wings and test himself in Europe’s elite leagues.
Following his sweep at the PSL Awards earlier this week, rumours of Tau's prospective move to Europe have gained steam, with clubs from France linked to the 23-year-old.
The Bafana Bafana international, who stood head and shoulders above his peers this season, has also attracted interest from the English Premier League, according to Mosimane.
‘Jingles’, who also bagged the Coach of the Season award on Tuesday evening, has resigned himself to losing the diminutive winger, but refuses to entertain interest from the developing leagues abroad.
“It’s going to be very difficult for us to keep Percy. Two Premier League teams [have entered the race to sign him],” said Mosimane.
“We’ve been talking about the top five [leagues] for him, and not to go to Denmark, Sweden – what is he going to do there?
“We’re talking Ligue 1, Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga – all the big ones. Now EPL has also knocked on the door.
“Basically what he has done for the year, and the Barcelona game also, has given you the opportunity [to see what level Tau is on].”
The three-time league winning tactician also feels it’s high time South Africa has another Premier League representative, and wants to see if Tau can live up to such expectations.
“My opinion: I think he must go guys. Let’s have a player in the EPL, we’ve got nobody now. He has done well for us, what else can he do for us?
“Let’s see him week-in and week-out, and let’s judge him there if he’s really … I think we want to know if he’s the real deal or not, so let him go.”
