Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o has urged the continent’s representatives at the 2018 FIFA World Cup to back themselves, especially with the many great players they now boast.
Africa’s five nations – Nigeria, Senegal, Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia – will be in Russia for the quadrennial global football spectacle, which kicks off in exactly two weeks.
While the likes of Germany, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, France and Argentina would ordinarily be considered amongst the favourites to lift the most coveted prize in international football, Eto’o feels it is high time African nations count themselves amongst the possible winners.
The former FC Barcelona striker believes with the array of African players now plying their trade across the top leagues in Europe, belief should be strong that history can be made by one of the continent’s teams to go all the way and lift the World Cup trophy.
“We need to believe. The first thing in football is to believe, and I think Africa has never really believed,” said Eto’o during the Castle Africa 5s event held in Lusaka last weekend.
“But you get the same chance as any other nation, so you need to believe. Now we have players like Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.
“We have a lot of big players in African teams now, but if we don’t believe then it’s impossible to win the World Cup.”
