Mamelodi Sundowns forward Percy Tau says his PSL Footballer of the Season crowning was never a target of his, but it came only as a reward for his contribution to the team’s success.

Tau bagged the top accolade, amongst others, at the annual end-of-season awards on Tuesday evening, pocketing R475 000 in prize money in the process.

The 24-year-old, who was a cut above his peers this campaign, has credited his Sundowns teammates and coaches for their contribution to his personal success.

“I’ll still have some time to relax and reflect, but I’m very proud of the work that has taken place this season,” said Tau.

“This was just a reward for myself of the good season that we had at Sundowns, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of the coach, technical team and my teammates –I think they did extremely well this season.

“And, like I said, this is just a reward, it wasn’t a dream of mine to be crowned footballer of the season.”

While his future at Chloorkop remains uncertain at this stage, the Bafana Bafana international has vowed to improve his game, especially his finishing, going forward.

“Going forward, you can expect a lot of improvement. I’m still working on my right foot, and I need to increase the numbers that I miss every game," said Tau, who shared the Golden Boot with Rodney Ramagalela with a modest 11 league goals.

“Okay, I scored 11 goals – I’m proud of that but at the back of my mind I know that I could’ve done much better with the chances that I missed. I’m still going to improve, there’s still time."
