Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia says he tried to convince experienced defender Bevan Fransman to stay with the club.
Fransman has turned down a new offer from the Team of Choice and will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June. Fransman said his goodbyes to his teammates after the Nedbank Cup final in Cape Town almost a fortnight ago.
The 34-year-old Fransman is yet to reveal which club he will be joining ahead of the 2018/19 campaign, but he will no doubt be missed both on and off the pitch at Maritzburg.
“I would have loved to keep Bevan for at least one more season, but it was beyond my control,” Kadodia said.
“Agents today, once the players come out of contract they don’t encourage them to sign and that’s the agent business. This is something we had no control over, but personally I would have loved to keep Bevan for the year.”
Maritzburg will be looking to hold on to Absa Premiership Defender of the Season Siyanda Xulu following the departure of Fransman, while new signing Denwin Farmer is seen as a long-term investment.
Farmer was unable to get regular game time at SuperSport United, but has an opportunity to showcase his talent next season with the Team of Choice.
