Siyanda Xulu's agent Paul Mitchell says he never doubted the PSL Defender of the Season would bounce back from his horror stay at Kaizer Chiefs.
Xulu claimed individual honours at the PSL Awards last night after a stellar first season with Maritzburg United, scoring three goals in 38 outings to help the club to a record fourth-place finish in the league and reach a first Nedbank Cup final.
The 26-year-old also recently earned a Bafana Bafana recall and will skipper the nation at the ongoing COSAFA Cup in Polokwane.
Xulu previously endured criticism after his five-year contract with Chiefs was terminated two years in, having barely featured for Amakhosi under Steve Komphela following his return to South Africa from Russian outfit FC Rostov.
However, Mitchell says his client has always done his talking on the pitch.
"We never lost focus. Siyanda has always done his talking on the field, on the pitch," Mitchell tells KickOff.com.
"The experience he has to date; many games in the PSL, three years in Europe, it stands him in good stead. What happened previously was out of his control and not something to dwell on.
"And to be nominated for the award is recognition of the hard work he has put in and also a compliment to the people who believed in him after a difficult period."
Mitchell adds: "It's a great honour for Siyanda to captain his country.
"He's very proud and it comes at the end of a great season for him individually and collectively with his colleagues at Maritzburg.
"The professionalism he has demonstrated throughout his career should serve as a role model to any young aspiring players and I'm sure this, coupled with his determination to win, will rub off on all of the younger members of the squad."
