Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says he has never worked with a talent like Percy Tau before and admits he thought the forward would prove to be "one of those ice-cream players".
Tau has enjoyed a stellar campaign for the Absa Premiership champions, providing 13 goals and as many assists in all competitions to earn a nomination for the PSL Footballer of the Season and players' player accolades, while sharing the Golden Boot with Rodney Ramagalela with 11 league strikes apiece.
Tau only rose to prominence the season before with the Brazilians, with Mosimane revealing he often clashes heads with the strong-willed 24-year-old.
"I must tell you Percy drives himself, I don't drive Percy," Mosimane said.
"I have told him also and I'm being honest. Through my 15-year football coaching career I have never coached a player like him because of his mentality, the way he thinks.
"I mean this guy keeps me every day before the match, he keeps me and says he wants to show me this and he shows me all the strengths. He shows me all the weaknesses.
"We have a lot of fights and I mean it. I will say no no no, this is not the way it should be done. You must treat it this way every match."
Mosimane added: "I have never had a player who really took the best out of me. We had our fights when he was playing for our MDC team that he should have won the cup with Khaya Shozi. I was very angry with them because after being 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go against Tuks they started to enjoy themselves thinking it is done, and Tuks equalised and they lost the title. I showed them what I was not happy with and Percy proved me wrong."
Mosimane initially thought Tau was content to be a crowd-pleaser rather than a game-changer.
"I never thought he could play effective football. I thought he is one of those ice-cream players playing to entertain. I never thought he could score goals - the best players do that. Then he proved me wrong. He scored nine last year and now 11.
"Really, I ate humble pie and he told me remember you never thought I will make it. I have never had a player who has an opinion like him."
