Bafana Bafana midfielder Keagan Dolly backing Africans to go big at 2018 FIFA World Cup

Bafana Bafana winger Keagan Dolly says he is still gutted to have missed out on this year’s FIFA World Cup, but has thrown his weight behind some of the African representatives.

All eyes are set to fall upon Russia in the next few weeks as the top nations from around the world battle it out for the most prized trophy in international football.

Despite South Africa’s failure to make the cut, which Dolly concedes is still a bitter pill to swallow thanks to their back-to-back defeats to Cape Verde, the Montpellier attacker is hopeful that one of Africa’s five representatives can advance at least to the knockout stages.

“We could have qualified if we just played like we did against Senegal the first time around, or away to Nigeria in the AFCON qualifiers, or even against Burkina Faso,” Dolly tells

“We just gave it away when we lost to Cape Verde home and away, and I think we only have ourselves to blame.

“I’m hoping a team like Nigeria can qualify for the next round and just prove that football in Africa is growing, you know.

“Egypt also have a few good players, some of whom I’ve played against in the CAF Champions League before, and someone like Mo Salah will obviously be counted on because he’s been doing great for Liverpool.

“Senegal, who were obviously in our qualifying group, have Sadio Mane and quite a few experienced guys who have been playing around Europe too, so I think they can do quite well as well.”
