Mamelodi Sundowns' Bangaly Soumahoro laments Horoya pitch in CAF Champions League clash

Posted: 24 May 2018 Time: 08:43

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Bangaly Soumahoro has praised his teammates' efforts to earn a point away in Guinea, where he bemoaned the pitch conditions.

Sundowns surrendered their lead late on as they were held to a 2-2 draw in Conakry on Tuesday evening, picking up their second point of the CAF Champions League group stage campaign thus far.

The Brazilians also managed a 1-1 stalemate with reigning champions Wydad Casablanca in Tshwane a few weeks ago, and currently occupy third spot in the group, with AS Togo-Port the only side in the pool yet to register a point.

Soumahoro, who started alongside Wayne Arendse at the Stade du 28 Septembre, defended that the draw was a decent result given Horoya's home advantage on a "difficult" surface to play on.

“It was a tough game but we are thankful that we at least got a point,” Soumahoro told Sundowns' official website.

“It wasn’t an easy game. It was very difficult. But the team showed maturity to return with a point.

"It was easy for Horoya to play from the back because they were playing at home and they are used to playing on a pitch like that.

"But for us it was a little bit difficult. We take this point going into the break and we will work harder when we return so that we return stronger.”

Downs will now enjoy a brief off-season during the FIFA World Cup period, before returning for the resumption of their continental campaign with back-to-back fixtures against AS Togo-Port in July.
