Keagan Dolly credits French Cup games for Montpellier lifeline

Posted: 23 May 2018 Time: 19:15

Bafana Bafana winger Keagan Dolly has shared his thoughts on his first full season with French Ligue 1 side Montpellier.

Dolly managed 22 appearances in all competitions for La Paillade this season, starting 10 games while coming on as a substitute on 12 occasions.

The 25-year-old also scored his first goal for the club against FC Nantes earlier this month, since his move from Mamelodi Sundowns in the January transfer window of last year.

Having seemingly found his feet in the second half of the campaign, Dolly has accredited his resurgence to making use of his opportunities in the French Cup at the turn of the year.

“I think the last six months of the season have been much better – the best since I moved here in January last year,” Dolly tells KickOff.com.

“After the December break, when we played in the cup games, that’s where I grabbed my opportunity to showcase what I can give and I think then I started to play more.”

Reflecting further on his slow start, during which he made just four league appearances between August and December, the former Ajax Cape Town winger explained that missing pre-season cost him the chance to earn his place in the coach’s plans.

“I think once the coach saw what I could do in the cup games that he played me in, he changed his mind on the type of player I am,” he explains.

“Because, if you remember, I missed out on pre-season due to injury so he didn’t really get to see much of me, and I think after pre-season he had made his mind up on which players he preferred and wanted to use most.

“So, I didn’t really get a chance until after the cup games that I got to play in, that helped with my game-time.”
