Brighton head coach Chris Houghton admits he's excited about the club's latest signing and revealed why they roped in the Nigerian set to star at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
In a swift transfer move since the end of the season, the Seagulls have started their preparations for the second campaign back in the English top-flight with the announcement of defender Leon Balogun.
The towering centre-back agreed a two-year deal with the South Coast outfit after his contract with Bundesliga outfit Mainz expired.
Houghton conceded his extensive experience and current age was a major factor behind their decision to sanction the transfer.
"Leon will add more depth to our defensive options," he told the club's website. "I am pleased to get our first piece of business done so early in the summer.
"He is in the peak years of his career and I am sure he will integrate well into the squad. He also has valuable experience, having played in the Bundesliga, the Europa League and at international level."
Balogun has been included in Nigeria's 30-man provisional squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
