Former Bidvest Wits striker Amr Gamal has expressed his delight upon hearing that he has been nominated for a PSL award.
Gamal was put forward for the Telkom Knockout Player of the Tournament prize along with ex-Wits teammate Darren Keet and Bloemfontein Celtic midfielder Lantshene Phalane.
The Egyptian international scored three goals in his four appearances in the tournament, playing a key role in The Clever Boys going on to be crowned champions, before departing South African shores after falling out with coach Gavin Hunt.
His exploits earned him recognition from the awards judging panel, which he has since lauded as “professional” given his low profile in the rest of the campaign.
“I’m happy for the nomination, and I hope to come and attend the ceremony,” the 26-year-old tells KickOff.com from Finland, where he is currently plying his trade with Helsinki.
“Even though I’m not there [in South Africa] anymore, the people have nominated me – this shows professionalism.
“I really enjoyed playing in South Africa, and I hope to come back again some day. Of course, I also hope to win this award.”
Although he says he would love to attend the end-of-season awards ceremony set to be hosted at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on Tuesday, May 29, Gamal will have club commitments as his side play their 12th round league fixture on the same night.
