Former back-to-back PSL Footballer of the Season Teko Modise has shared his opinion on who should win the top award this season, and has argued against firm favourite Percy Tau.
It has been a rollercoaster season in which consistency was largely lacking amongst teams and individuals, apart from arguably a handful of players that stood head and shoulders above the rest.
The Premier Soccer League on Monday announced the final nominees for the various individual accolades set to be handed over at the annual end-of-season awards ceremony on May 29.
The big talking point in recent weeks has been the potential candidates for the top prize of Footballer of the Season, for which the three nominees are Mamelodi Sundowns duo Percy Tau and Hlompho Kekana, as well as Maritzburg United star Siphesihle Ndlovu.
While Tau’s name has been thrown about by the vast majority, Modise was most impressed by the presence of 32-year-old Kekana, who has been a true stalwart for The Brazilians.
“Football is about opinions, but what I like about Hlompho is that he’s always been consistent – he’s been nominated, even last season and the season before as well,” commented Modise upon the revelation of the top three candidates.
“So, it’s just that now he’s facing Tau, who’s been exceptional this season, but I think if either of them [Kekana or Tau] win it, they truly deserve it.”
Pressed for his choice on who is most deserving, Modise could not withstand the temptation to go against the popular choice of Tau, as he explained why Kekana deserves the award more.
“I would say this, I think because Hlompho has been consistent – he’s been there three times – he deserves it,” he added.
“Percy, with the way he’s performed, he’s still young and still has that gap within him that he can still learn and improve his game, so he can still win it [in future].
“Because of Hlompho’s consistency, which shows according to his stats – and stats don’t lie, so he’s been there because he’s been consistent.
“And Percy, this season we saw and we all know the contribution he has brought to his team – we cannot ignore that, but I’m just saying, I would give it to Hlompho because he’s been there three times and there’s a reason why he’s there.”
