Analysing PSL Goalkeeper of the Season nominees Itumeleng Khune, Richard Ofori and Denis Onyango

With the nominees for the annual PSL Awards being revealed earlier this week, KickOff.com brings you a statistical breakdown of all the candidates in the build up to the prestigious event.

The curtain will officially close on the 2017/18 PSL season next Tuesday, when the league’s top performers will be recognised for their efforts across the campaign at the always-glamorous PSL Awards ceremony at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Over the next week, KickOff.com will analyse the nominees in each major category, giving an overview of their season and the merits for their nomination.

We begin with the Goalkeeper of the Season Award, which will this year be contested by Itumeleng Khune, Richard Ofori and Denis Onyango.

Itumeleng Khune

Despite a relatively poor showing by Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs, the shot-stopper proved why he is the country’s undisputed number one after another consistent season between the poles. The Glamour Boys boasted the meanest defence across all 16 clubs in the league this season, conceding 22 goals in their 30 league matches, with Khune keeping 16 clean sheets, conceding just 18 goals in the 27 games he started.

A three-time winner of the Goalkeeper of the Season award, Khune this season topped the charts for number of clean sheets kept and least number of goals conceded per 90 minutes (0.67), while he also saved the most penalties in the league (2).

Richard Ofori

Winner of the 2015 Goalkeeper of the Season in the Ghanaian Premier League, Ofori only joined Maritzburg United from Wa All Stars in July last year, but made the vacant number one jersey his own at the Team of Choice this season, playing a vital role in helping the KwaZulu-Natal club punch well above their weight to secure a fourth-place finish in the league – the highest in their history.

Starting 27 of the 30 league games across the campaign, the Ghanaian international kept 11 clean sheets, conceding 21 goals at an average of 0.78 goals per game, helping Maritzburg keep the second-best defence in the league.

Ofori topped the goalkeeper charts in terms of saves per shots on target faced (81%), as well as the number of saves made per goals conceded (4.28).

Denis Onyango

One of the most decorated PSL players with 10 trophies to his name, including the CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup, Onyango played an integral part in helping Sundowns secure their eighth league title of the PSL era. The 2016 CAF player of the Year Based in Africa started 25 league games for the champions this season, keeping 12 clean sheets and conceding 20 goals at an average of 0.8 goals per game.

Uganda’s number one, who claimed the 2015/16 PSL Goalkeeper of the Season award, saved 68.3% of the shots he faced, making 2.15 saves on average per goal he conceded en route to lifting his sixth Absa Premiership crown.

Who do you feel is most deserving of the 2017/18 PSL Goalkeeper of the Year award?
