Bernard Parker says Steve Komphela's departure is part of football

Kaizer Chiefs striker Bernard Parker says coach Steve Komphela’s departure is part of football, and has urged those who remain to restore the honour of the club’s brand.

Chiefs endured a trophyless three seasons under their former mentor, who was rather unfortunately pushed out of the club following their Nedbank Cup exit at the hands of eventual winners Free State Stars exactly a month ago.

While some were ruthless in their pursuit to have Komphela step down in his last few weeks at Naturena, a faction of the club’s supporters feel pity that the coach took the fall for the team’s failures.

However, Parker has defended that coaches the world over have to face the music when their team is underperforming, as he highlighted the reality of how cruel the game can sometimes be.

“It’s football. If the team is not doing well – and you can see it everywhere in world football – the first finger pointed is at the coach,” conceded Parker.

“[Komphela] is such a good person, he’s got a great personality. He did everything in his power and might, and unfortunately things didn’t go his way.

“In any coach’s philosophy it’s entirely up to him to bring the best out of his players, and to bring results and consistency.

"Each coach has their preference as to who they want to have in their team and who they would want to play. That’s football, and that’s how it goes.

“I wish him all the best in his future endeavours, and for those who remain it’s now up to us to turn things around for the club and make sure that Kaizer Chiefs get to where it needs to be.”
