Zambia, who won the competition on home soil last year, played to a 1-1 draw with the Rwandans in Lusaka on Saturday, as the visitors’ Gueulette Marie cancelled out Mwiya Malumo’s goal for the hosts. Both goals were scored in the second half, but Zambia progressed 3-1 on aggregate after winning the first leg in Kigali 2-0.

Zambia will play Burundi in the final round of qualifiers for the competition that will be played in Niger.

West African big guns Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana and Senegal have also qualified for the final round of qualifiers following their victories over the weekend.

Nigeria beat Guinea-Bissau 1-0 on home soil, securing a 3-2 aggregate win.

Cameroon needed a penalty shootout to overcome Uganda, after the score was level at 1-1 at the end of both legs. All of Cameroon’s penalty takers found the back of the net, while Paul Willa missed the final spot kick for the Ugandans.

Senegal progressed to the final round via a penalty shootout against Egypt. Both sides failed to score over two legs, so they needed to be separated with spot kicks. In the end Senegal won 7-6.

The Ghanaians, meanwhile, cruised to a 2-0 victory over North Africans Algeria in Cape Coast, after the first leg in Algiers ended in a goalless draw.

South Africa, Gabon, Burundi, Mali, Malawi, Congo, Benin and Mauritania have booked themselves a spot in the third round of qualifiers.
