Mashego came on as a second-half substitute in the final at Cape Town Stadium, as Ea Lla Koto held on doggedly to secure a 1-0 victory, thanks to a first half goal scored by Goodman Dlamini.

The 31-year-old first made a name for himself during the 2011 Nedbank Cup when he was with Baroka FC, who were campaigning in the amateur ranks of South African football at the time.

Baroka reached the semi-finals of the tournament and a number of players, including Mashego, attracted interest from PSL clubs. Now after spending seven years with the Free State side, Mashego is saying goodbye. He did not, however, want to say where he is headed.

“My contract finishes in June, so what I can say to you is that there will be a new beginning. I won’t be in the red and white [of Free State Stars],” he tells

“I am happy that I leave the club after we won the cup and we are in the top eight. It won’t be a case of ‘he left because the team was not doing well’. I am happy that the team won, so they will carry on and I will carry on elsewhere.”

He continues: “I think I have run my race with Free State Stars. I have been here for seven years and I feel I need to face a new challenge. Free State Stars has been good to me and I have been good to them. Now I want to see what the new beginnings will bring.”

Mashego says winning the cup on Saturday is the finest moment in his career.

“I played two semi-finals. Being in the final was a step forward and winning it will forever be in my memory. This tournament put me where I am today and winning the competition is the best moment in my career,” he says.
