Free State Stars secured their first Nedbank Cup title following a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United in the final on Saturday.
Maritzburg came with the game’s first shot on goal after 21 minutes when Pogiso Sanoka fired in from the left side, but it went over the top.
Andrea Fileccia then tried to play in his team-mates inside the box, but his cross-cum-shot was easily dealt with by Thela Ngobeni.
With six minutes to half-time, captain Bevan Fransman had Ngobeni grasping to hold onto his header from a free-kick as he made a smart, low save.
After sustaining the earlier pressure, Ea Lla Koto went into the tunnel smiling after a route-one release from Ngobeni to Sinethemba Jantjie, who set-up Goodman Dlamini for a smart curling finish on 44 minutes.
The Team of Choice made the first change at half-time, bringing on Motsie Matima for Rushine De Reuck at the start of the second half.
Looking to stage a comeback, United got the first shot on goal after Lebohang Maboe fired his shot wide after a cross from the right.
Siphelele Mthembu, on course to add another piece of silverware after his successes with Platinum Stars in 2013, tried to increase the lead but shot poorly at Richard Ofori later on.
In the final stages, it became a ding-dong affair, with the best chance falling to Siyanda Xulu in added time as he failed to stick home from close range as Stars held on for the win.
