Free State Stars defender Rooi Mahamutsa talks up CAF football to teammates

Posted: 19 May 2018 Time: 14:00

Free State Stars defender Rooi Mahamutsa says he has been telling his teammates how great it is to play football on the continent.

The former Orlando Pirates man played in both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup finals with the Buccaneers, and would love to make a return to playing in Africa now that he is in the colours of Ea Lla Koto.

Stars would qualify for the 2019 Confederation Cup if they beat Maritzburg United in the Nedbank Cup final at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday night (19h00).

“The feeling is different. It’s not the same feeling as being in the last-32 or the last-16. The final is another level, so the feeling is different to any other stage,” said Mahamutsa, who won the 2014 Nedbank Cup with Pirates.

“Playing in Africa is a good feeling because that’s a nice environment. I have been speaking with the guys, telling them that we should go all out and win the trophy so that we qualify [for the Confederation Cup]. I tell them ‘you’ll see the environement out there, it’s totally different to domestic football’. I look forward to playing there again, so we will go all out to win the final.”

Earlier this week, Stars coach Luc Eymael said he would love to see Stars playing in the Confederation Cup and does not understand why clubs complain when they are playing on the continent.
