Free State Stars captain Paulus Masehe has warned his teammates not to think about bonuses heading into the Nedbank Cup final against Maritzburg United.
Ea Lla Koto take on the Team of Choice in Cape Town looking to end an impressive campaign on a high.
General manager Rantsi Mokoena did not want to reveal how much the players would get should they win the showdown, but said they go into the match tomorrow with some extra cash in their pockets for qualifying for the final.
Winning the final would mean more money in the players’ pockets, but Masehe says they cannot think about bonuses before they even get onto the pitch and play.
“We try put in their head that ‘for you to get the bonus, you have to play first’. So the most important thing that we have to concentrate on is playing and making sure that we win the match. The bonus will come after because you cannot count your bonus before you play the match. You have to play the match, prepare for the match, so that you can get that bonus.”
Stars made a slow start to the season with former coach Sammy Troughton, but the arrival of Belgian Luc Eymael saw them moving up the table and eventually finishing sixth. They’ve had a tough Nedbank Cup run, with three matches away from home, but they’ve managed to fight to get the required results.
That’s the fighting spirit they will need to overcome Fadlu Davids’ Maritzburg side.
“What will win it for us on Saturday is the level of fitness, the never-say-die attitude and converting our chances because we are definitely going to create a whole lot of chances,” said Masehe.
