Mamelodi Sundowns boss Patrice Motsepe says Chiefs supremo Kaizer Motaung our father of football

Mamelodi Sundowns boss Patrice Motsepe has dubbed Kaizer Chiefs founder Kaizer Motaung ‘our father of football’ and presented the 73-year-old with an award in respect of his achievements.

As a player alone, Motaung’s accomplishments are legendary. He was a star among Soweto schoolboys, a teenage debutant for Orlando Pirates, a trail-blazing export to the USA and the icon around which the Kaizer XI was formed before it developed into Amakhosi as we know it.

Motaung participated in the birth of the NPSL – albeit as a player – in the rise of the NSL, and in the transformation of that entity into the PSL, of which he was a key architect.

Motaung, who has been involved in football for over 50 years, received the accolade at half-time of Sundowns' 3-1 friendly loss to Spanish giants Barcelona in the inaugural Nelson Mandela Centenary Cup at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

The prize is fashioned in the shape of a lion, which is associated with the Bataung clan.

“We would like to honour Mr Motaung for his sacrifices and all he has done for football in the country,” Motsepe said, as quoted on Chiefs' website.

“We refer to Ntate Motaung as ‘our father of football’ because he has done so much for the game here at home and globally.”

Motaung said: “I am truly humbled by this gesture from Mr Motsepe during this auspicious occasion where we celebrate the life of Madiba who would’ve turned 100 years old this year.”
