Throwback Thursday: Sisa Nombe

Moroka Swallows legend Sisa Nombe feels he broke boundaries in making his way to one of the biggest teams in the country during his playing days.

Besides Swallows, Nombe also turned out for Manning Rangers, Jomo Cosmos and Maritzburg United before retiring in the 2006/2007 season because of injuries.

"I had too much injuries and I decided to call it quits, and age as well was no longer on my side," Nombe tells

"My first team in the PSL was Moroka Swallows, then Manning Rangers and Jomo Cosmos. But at Swallows and Rangers is where I enjoyed my football. I earned enough money at Cosmos though in the 2004/2005 season. I think ja, because after tax I would get around R22 000. It was small but you know money depends on what kind of life you live as a person, because some of us had so many responsibilities you know. Coming from Transkei to live in Joburg with a family, and you also have extended families as well, so it was not easy because at the same time I had a kid. Some can say it's enough but living in Joburg where the cost of living is high ... Today players they are well paid today.

"But I don't regret any moment in playing PSL football because no one really thought I would end up playing professional football, especially coming from Transkei. I broke so many boundaries coming from Mthatha to Joburg to one of the biggest teams in the country. So I don't regret any moment besides financial-wise because we were not paid. At Swallows I was earning about R2300 after tax. I'm telling you my brother I was struggling because I had to pay R800 rent first, had to buy groceries, on top of that I had a one-year-old kid and its mother to support. You understand I'm talking about R2300 huh? After all that you are left with nothing, instead you are left with debts. That time people see you on TV every week and assume 'eish lamadoda adla imali lawa' [these guys are loaded], eish football. But we loved the game you know. I enjoyed playing but at the same time 'bengiphila ngama' loan all the way."

These days Nombe is unemployed in his home town of Mthatha and admits life is a struggle.

"At this point in time I'm unemployed, but last season I would do some coaching in one of the SAB League teams around here. But I wouldn't say they were paying me because I would only get money for petrol. So I can't say I was working. Due to the financial situation and constraints that I'm under right now, I need to get a job that is paying. I stay with my wife and my kids in a township here in Mthatha. My wife works as a clerk in one of the schools here. It was much better during my playing days because I was earning something. These days I'm not earning anything, it's bits and pieces. Sometimes I can get odd jobs but eish, it's a struggle my brother, it's a struggle. Things are not easy at all on my side, especially with kids who have to go to school."
