Mokotjo: The sky is the limit

Bafana Bafana midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo has reflected on his first season with Brentford, and used the Mamelodi Sundowns slogan in pointing out their target for next term.
The 27-year-old earned a move to the English second-tier after spending all of eight years with various clubs in the Netherlands, where he grew to become one of the top players in the Eredivisie.
This caught the eye of the Bees, who lured him to the Championship, where he helped the club to a ninth-place finish this season – missing out on the Premier League play-offs by just six points.
Mokotjo has since explained the experience of having to adapt to a vastly different playing style, as well as a new role handed down to him by manager Dean Smith.
“I’ve had to adapt to the pace of the game and the more offensive role that I’ve been playing in midfield,” Mokotjo told iFollow Brentford.
“Looking back at my first season I can say it’s a job well done. I’ve become accustomed with my new role; I can play in both a defensive midfield position and more offensive, because I have so much energy in me!
“I think it’s a win-win situation for myself and the club – they have a player who is very versatile.”
While the SuperSport United youth graduate gained prominence amongst the Brentford faithful in his first season, he downplayed his individual contribution and instead assessed the team’s showing, before pinpointing areas needing improvement for next season.
“I value collective achievements over individual moments, so the way the team has grown and adapted in a short period of time has been the winner for me,” he added.
“A team performance that stands out would be the Birmingham City game. We won 5-0 and everything just came together for us.
“We weren’t satisfied with the scoreline despite scoring five goals – we dominated that game. The one-nil victories both home and away showed that we have a lot of character in the group.
“Next season we have to be more aggressive and turn our weaknesses into strengths – once that happens, the sky is the limit.”
