Former Bidvest Wits striker Amr Gamal not included in Egypt's preliminary World Cup squad

Former Bidvest Wits striker Amr Gamal has missed out on Egypt’s World Cup preliminary squad, as coach Hector Cuper included Arsenal’s Mohammed El Neny, despite his injury concerns.

Cuper has named a 29-man sqaud for Russia 2018 and has also included veteran shot-stopper Essam El Hadary, who could become the World Cup’s oldest ever player.

Gamal, who played during the qualifiers, joined Wits at the start of the season on loan from Egyptian giants Al Ahly. He made a promising start, but soon fell out of favour with Clever Boys coach Gavin Hunt. It led to his departure in February, as he joined Finnish side HJK Helsinki. He has played seven matches since joining Helsinki, including the final five minutes of a cup final of the Suomen Cup on Saturday. He is yet to score for his club.

El Neny, meanwhile, has an ankle problem, but has been included in the squad.
