Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango says they are determined to play in the FIFA Club World Cup again.
Sundowns qualified for the 2016 edition in Japan after winning that year's CAF Champions League for the first time in their history.
The Brazilians finished sixth in the seven-team international tournament and are itching to get another opportunity to prove themselves against the best clubs from the different continents around the world.
Sundowns began this year’s Champions League group stage campaign with a 1-1 draw at home against defending champions Wydad Casablanca a fortnight ago. It’s not the ideal result at home, but Onyango is confident they can get to the knockout phase and go on to win the competition, which would guarantee them a spot at the Club World Cup.
“We want to get the second star for the club. We have been going to the Champions League consistently and we believe we have the quality to go all the way. We are looking to get as far as the final because we want to go to the Club World Cup again. Those are the ambitions we have as players,” Onyango tells KickOff.com.
Sundowns will next play Horoya from Guinea in the continental event on May 22.
“We all wanted our win. We wanted to start well and get maximum points at home against Wydad, but we were playing a very experienced team and they are the defending champions,” Onyango says.
“They knocked us out last year and they knew how we play and they made it very difficult for us. A point is not bad, it’s better than nothing. It’s okay and it’s a point we will take to our next game which is in Guinea. It will also be a difficult encounter, but the guys are focused on getting the team into the quarter-finals.”
