Highlands Park’s Player of the Season Mothobi Mvala has explained why he stayed loyal to the club when they were relegated from the Absa Premiership last season.
Highlands finished bottom of the top-flight table last term after a disappointing campaign which saw them record just five victories in 30 league matches.
There was talk of clubs being interested in Mvala, but the player was determined to go down to the National First Division and help the team back up. Now, a year later, the Lions of the North have returned to the big time by clinching the NFD title and Mvala has played a key role in his side’s success, scoring 12 goals from midfield.
“To be honest, it’s a good feeling [to be back in the PSL] because last time we got relegated. We are back in the PSL and we hope we do not repeat the same mistakes from the last time,” the former Under-23 international tells KickOff.com.
“There were teams that were interested in me after we got relegated, but I was still contracted to Highlands Park, so I had to honour my contract. But I obviously wanted to bring the team back to the PSL. When we were relegated, I was part of the team and I was playing every game. I think I could have done more to save the team, but luck was not on our side.
“I sat down with management and they told me that they need me to help the team get back to the PSL.”
Mvala credited head coach Owen da Gama for his good run of form in front of goal this season.
“To be honest it’s a good feeling. It’s the first time in my career I score that many goals. It’s the hard work and the love of scoring goals. As players, we all love scoring goals. After training and during our sessions we practice finishing,” he says.
“I have to thank coach Owen and his technical team for the formation they have used in our team. It allowed me to get forward a lot, which is why I scored so many goals this season.”
