Arthur Zwane backs Yusuf Bunting for Kaizer Chiefs first team next season

Kaizer Chiefs development coach Arthur Zwane has sought to explain what has prevented the progression of budding striker Yusuf Bunting, who has made a name for himself with the reserve team.

Bunting has played an integral part in the Amakhosi’s MultiChoice Diski Challenge setup in recent seasons, and was a key contributor in their recent Diski Shield triumph.

However, the 22-year-old, who earned promotion to the first team at the start of the season, has yet to make his professional debut for the Glamour Boys.

Zwane, who has vast knowledge of Bunting’s development history at the club, has since revealed the reason behind his delay with the senior team.

“I started working with Yusuf when he was 15, approaching 16, and he is one of the best finishers,” Zwane tells

“He’s deadly in front of goals, and we always knew that he’s a prolific striker, but he was just prone to injuries, and that is something that has delayed his progress.

“But, look, he’s something special. A 100 percent fit Yusuf Bunting can score a lot of goals for you. We just hope and wish that he’ll be fit and ready, because he’s already part of the first team.

“We obviously needed to give him game-time this side so that he gets his confidence back, and also try and develop his game further.

“He is promising but I do believe he should have been far by now, if it was not for injuries.”

Should he be over his injury troubles, ‘10111’ backs Bunting to be a valuable asset in the first team setup where the club is looking to rebuild for next season, but warns against throwing him into the deep end as results will be a priority after their three-year trophy drought.

“I think he can offer the first team something, it’s just that we are obviously under pressure at the moment in terms of results,” he adds.

“These are the players you want to give an opportunity to but you can’t just throw them into the deep end, because you want to make sure their integration is smooth.

“So, that’s what we’re trying to do. It’s not only him, there are many promising boys and it remains to be seen if he will be ready for that level.

“Also, after winning this cup we’ve just sent a strong message and we have raised high hopes of people.”
