National U-20 striker Lyle Foster says the players in camp know they are there to do duty for their country and have put their respective club rivalries aside, as he also reflects on his first season in the PSL.
Amajita are currently in camp preparing for their two-legged second round 2019 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Mozambique over the course of the next two weeks.
Coach Thabo Senong has called up a variety of players representing the country’s various tiers – including the PSL, MDC, NFD, ABC Mostepe and SAB Leagues, but Foster, who is establishing himself in the Orlando Pirates first team, assures no one feels superior in camp.
“There’s no egos here, because we know that we need to come here and do a job. At the end of the day, if I play for Pirates and someone plays for Sundowns it doesn’t matter because here we’re playing for South Africa,” Foster told the media on Wednesday.
“When we get onto the field, at the end of the day there is no Sundowns or Pirates, it’s South Africa and that’s the job at hand that we need to finish.”
Having been promoted to the senior team at the start of the season, the 17-year-old has managed 11 appearances in all competitions as the Bucs technical team look to gradually blood him in.
Despite just one start to his name, registering one goal and one assist this season, the Noordgesig-born forward believes it has been a great stepping stone for him to excel going forward.
“I’d say it’s been a good start this season, although I didn’t get much game-time. I’m happy with the outcome of the season and I’m happy with my contribution even though it was minimal,” he added.
“I think it was a great learning curve and a stepping stone to a bright future, and I hope that I can play more games for the club and try to win titles.”
Amajita depart for Beira, Mozambique on Thursday morning and will face off with the young Mambas on Saturday afternoon, with kick-off scheduled for 15h00. The return leg is set to be hosted a week later.
