Bidvest Wits honour individual performers despite dismal 2017/18 season

Outgoing Absa Premiership champions Bidvest Wits have awarded some of their players following a tough campaign in which they relinquished their crown to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Contrary to previous years when Wits held their end of season celebrations at The Venue in Melrose Arch in 2016 and The Theatre on the Track in Kyalami last year, the club this year opted for a more intimate yet less posh location at the Olives and Plates restuarant on the university's main campus.

This, however, is understandable given the dismal showing put out by the squad this term, as they languished in the bottom half of the league table for most of the season and are yet to secure their place in the top-eight with one game left.

It is certainly a season to forget for Gavin Hunt's charges, who, although lifted the Telkom Knockout in December, were a shadow of the side that lifted the club's maiden top flight championship in their history a year ago.

At the luncheon on Wednesday, left-back Sifiso Hlanti, who was the only player to play over 30 games in all competitions this season, walked away the big winner as he bagged the Player – and Player's Player – of the Season trophies.

20-year-old right-back Reeve Frosler, who is set to join Stuart Baxter's Bafana Bafana camp for the upcoming COSAFA Cup later this month, walked away with his second Young Player of the Season title in successive years.

Meanwhile, former Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Bongani Khumalo picked up the Coach's Award for his efforts in covering for both Buhle Mkhwanazi and Thulani Hlatshwayo whenever necessary.

Wits face already-relegated Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in their final fixture on Saturday afternoon (15h00), and will look to collect maximum points and hope other results go their way in order to qualify for next season's MTN 8 competition.
