After winning his fifth title with Mamelodi Sundowns, goalkeeper Denis Onyango is inspired to reach the record set by Bidvest Wits winger Daine Klate.
Klate, the most successful player in the PSL era, has won six league titles in his career; three with SuperSport United, two with Orlando Pirates and the one with Wits last season.
Onyango won three league titles during his time at SuperSport and won his first with Sundowns in 2015/2016. He was on loan to Wits when Sundowns won the title in 2013/14.
“It’s a great feeling, obviously being on five [titles] now. I won three with SuperSport and two with Sundowns, which is amazing because it’s not easy. Not a lot of players have managed to do that. It keeps me motivated to win more because I want to be in the history books as one of the players who won as many league titles as possible,” the Ugandan captain tells KickOff.com.
“Daine has done fantastic. I was with him at SuperSport when we won the titles and he went on to win again with Pirates and Wits. It’s amazing and I want to be a part of that history like Daine Klate. It is one of those things that motivates me to be one of the top guys with league titles.”
He adds: “At the moment I am on five and I am looking forward to another one, probably next year or in the seasons to come.”
Sundowns will receive their Absa Premiership trophy after Saturday’s match against Bloemfontein Celtic at Dr Molemela Stadium. Kick-off is at 15h00.
