Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango gives his thoughts on Goalkeeper of the Season award

Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper Denis Onyango feels more should be considered than just clean sheets when selecting the Absa Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season.
If only clean sheets were considered, as is the case in the English Premier League, then Kaizer Chiefs keeper Itumeleng Khune would walk away with the award. Khune has 16 clean sheets in the league.
Onyango suggests Khune is a favourite for the prize, but believes himself and others are just as worthy of the accolade.
“I don’t know the procedure they follow, but if it’s about clean sheets, then Khune wins it hands down,” Onyango says.
“He has done fantastic for the team, but if you look at how you’ve helped the team achieve, I think they would look at different individuals. There’s me, there’s [Richard] Ofori who has done well for Maritzburg and there’s also Sage Stephens who has done well for Cape Town City. I think he has 11 or 12 clean sheets.
“A lot of things have to be looked at, not at only clean sheets. You need to look at how you helped the team achieve and that will be done by the committee. But at the moment I think Itu has done well and not to disregard the other guys. For me, whichever way it goes it will be fine with me.”
