Baroka FC look set to be without on-loan midfielder Gift Motupa for SuperSport United duel

Posted: 8 May 2018 Time: 16:00

Baroka FC could go into their final match of the season on Saturday without one of their key attackers.

Midfielder Gift Motupa, on loan from Orlando Pirates, suffered a hamstring injury in a friendly match on Friday and is now a doubt to face SuperSport United in the crucial contest at Lucas Moripe Stadium (15h00).

While both teams will be looking for three points, all Baroka need is a draw to ensure they stay another season in the PSL. The same, however, cannot be said for SuperSport.

“For now I am not sure if I am going to play because I have a hamstring problem. I am not 100 percent guaranteed to play,” the midfielder tells KickOff.com.

“I have not been training. I got injured during a friendly match on Friday.”

Whether or not he plays, Motupa would love to go back to Pirates knowing that Baroka are still in the PSL.

“It’s not going to be an easy because it’s an important game for both of us, but we need to make sure we win. You know it’s difficult to play away from home, but we will prepare ourselves enough to ensure we fight on the day.”

Baroka had a good start to the season and spent much time in the top half of the table, but the second half of the campaign has been difficult. After parting ways with coach Kgoloko Thobejane, as well as influential defender and captain Olaleng Shaku, the club has struggled quite a bit.

“We are still learning in this league and obviously somewhere we will be inconsistent,” Motupa says.

Technical Director Doctor Khumalo has been asked to finish the season in the hotseat and was on the bench when the side played to a 2-2 draw with Bloemfontein Celtic in their last match.

The Kaizer Chiefs legend will have to make sure they get the required result to avoid the play-offs.
