Essien gets goal of the season

Posted: 22 May 2009 Time: 14:51

Michael Essien’s volley against Barcelona in the semi finals of the UEFA Champions League was voted goal of the season at the club’s awards ceremony on Thursday.

The award voted for by the club’s supporters was in recognition of the fine left footed volley that took Chelsea to within a minute of another Champions League final before Andrea Iniesta’s late heroics wrecked Chelsea’s ambitions.   It was the second time in three seasons that Essien has picked up the award. The first was for a wonderful long range effort that gave Chelsea a share of the spoils at home to Arsenal in a Premier League game in 2007.   Essien was presented with the award by Chelsea’s goal scoring legend Jimmy Floyd Hasslebank and insisted he had meant to hit the volley despite assertions by several commentators that he had not.   "I meant to do it because when I saw the ball coming that was the only option that came to my mind, I tried to take it and I had a bit of luck. It is difficult to score those kinds of goals and you need a bit of luck."
