Mamelodi Sundowns will play Spanish giants Barcelona on May 16 in an end of season friendly clash.
The Absa Premiership champions will meet the Spanish champions at FNB Stadium. The sides met in a friendly match in 2007, a game the Catalan giants won 2-1.
At the time, Barcelona had stars like Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o and Deco playing against the likes of Surprise Moriri, Godfrey Sapula and Brian Baloyi. Barca were coached by Frank Rijkaard and former Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund was in the Sundowns hot seat.
Part of the agreement says Barca should bring along the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta, who is leaving the Catalan giants at the end of June.
Earlier this year Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe hinted that they would play a high-profile match against a European giant.
"The plan was to make the announcement on Monday in Spain. Somehow it got into the public domain and there has been so many enquiries," Motsepe said on Metro FM's The Ultimate Sport Show this evening.
"This is the year of the Nelson Mandela Centenary year. We have partnered with the Nelson Mandela Foundation."
Sundowns, meanwhile, will begin their CAF Champions League group stage campaign against defending champions Wydad Casablanca at Lucas Moripe Stadium tomorrow night (21h00). Wydad knocked Sundowns out in the quarterfinals last year, so coach Pitso Mosimane's men will be looking to get one over the Moroccans.
