FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi moves clear of Liverpool's Mohamed Salah in race for European Golden Shoe

Posted: 30 April 2018 Time: 19:00

FC Barcelona attacking talisman Lionel Messi is now on course for a record fifth European Golden Shoe after overtaking Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah in the race for the prestigious honour.

With Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi both winning the award a record four times, Messi now has the chance of moving clear of the Real Madrid superstar with a record fifth title.

His hat-trick in the 4-2 victory over Deportivo this weekend not only ensured the Blaugrana secured their LaLiga title in emphatic fashion, but he also moved one goal ahead of Salah - with his 32nd goal in 33 league outings.

Messi now has four games remaining in the Spanish top-flight to further stake his claim for the honour, while Salah, who failed to score in the 0-0 draw with Stoke City this weekend, only has two games to feature in.

In third place, Lazio's Ciro Immobile sits on 29 goals for the season, with three games remaining, while Robert Lewandowski with 28 and Edinson Cavani/Mauro Icardi round up the top-five with 27 goals each.

Top five goalscorers:

1. 32 goals - Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona)
2. 31 goals - Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)
3. 29 goals - Ciro Immobile (Lazio)
4. 28 goals - Robert Lewandowski (FC Bayern)
5. 27 goals - Edinson Cavani/Mauro Icardi (PSG/Inter)
