Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Hlompho Kekana cannot wait to lift his first Absa Premiership trophy as captain of the club in two weeks.
Sundowns’ 3-1 victory over Ajax Cape Town at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday confirmed them as 2017/18 league champions, taking their number of titles in the PSL era to eight.
Kekana has now won five league titles in his career, two with SuperSport United and three with Sundowns. However, it is his first crown as captain of the Brazilians and he can’t wait till the final day of the season on May 12, when they play Bloemfontein Celtic, to get his hands on a trophy.
“I feel so fortunate to have won the league with Mamelodi Sundowns. It’s my fifth league title and being part of the team that has made history by winning an eighth PSL title is special,” the experienced campaigner tells KickOff.com.
“It feels good that I will be lifting the eighth title that Sundowns wins, so it means a lot for my career and my life.”
He adds: “I remember the sacrifices my family made for me to get to where I am today. I am happy because winning this has a lot of meaning for me.”
Sundowns will now focus on reclaiming the CAF Champions League title. They begin their group stage campaign at home to defending champions Wydad Casablanca on Saturday.
