Orlando Pirates striker Augustine Mulenga has welcomed their return to the CAF Champions League, and looks forward to competing with the best in Africa.
The Buccaneers confirmed their return to the premier continental competition in which they finished as runners-up five years ago, after securing their place in the top-two on the Absa Premiership standings last week.
Mulenga grabbed a brace, taking his tally to three goals since his arrival at Pirates in March, as they thrashed Bidvest Wits 4-0 behind closed doors at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening.
While Bucs were beaten to league honours by Mamelodi Sundowns over the weekend as they went down 1-0 at Cape Town City, Mulenga is excited the team will soon be competing on a bigger stage again.
“Pirates is a big club, and a big club deserves to compete in the big competition. It’s good for us that we have confirmed that we are going to compete in the Champions League,” said the Zambia international.
“It’s a good feeling for us as the players, and we just have to continue working hard so that we can compete with the big clubs in Africa.”
Having arrived at the club in early March, after competing with Chipolopolo at the African Nations Championships in Morocco in January, the 28-year-old also feels he is slowly starting to catch up to the level of teammates as he looks to reach full steam by the end of the season.
“I’m catching up bit by bit. I’m sure by the end of the season I will find myself in the position I want to be in,” he stated.
