Ayanda Patosi’s strike was enough for Cape Town City to sink Orlando Pirates 1-0 in their Absa Premiership match on Saturday afternoon.
The match was tight in the opening exchanges with both sides organised defensively.
The Buccaneers pressed high in the first quarter looking to disrupt City, who were building patiently from the back.
The two sides could not get any passing rhythm going after half-an-hour as there was a lot of possession turnover.
However, Ayanda Patosi broke the deadlock in the 35th minute for the Citizens with a wonderful half-volley from just outside the box that dipped into the bottom corner, 1-0.
The Soweto giants were holding City in their own half and hovering just around and inside their box in the closing minutes of the half, and almost equalised but Thabo Qalinge was ruled offside after netting in the closing stages.
The Bucs were patiently building their play going forward 10 minutes into the second stanza, while City were happy to sit back and look for opportunities on a counter-attack.
Qalinge almost sensationally found the reply for the visitors in the 67th minute with volleyed strike inside the box but his effort came off the top of the crossbar.
City were succeeding in breaking the momentum of Pirates' play by committing fouls and delaying tactics.
Qalinge should have equalised seven minutes from time for Bucs after going through on the right side of the box, but his strike came off City goalkeeper Sage Stephens’ back and sailed out after sliding into the shot.
There were end-to-end attacks in the closing stages, but in the end, City managed to hold on and claim all the three points.
