Kaizer Chiefs have reached out to some of those affected by the recent fan rampage at Moses Mabhida Stadium during their Nedbank Cup semi-final in Durban.

Amakhosi marketing director Jessica Motaung and a few other officials paid a visit to the two security marshals Sabelo Maziba and Khumbulani Qwabe, who suffered significant injuries in the onslaught from a faction of the club’s unruly supporters.

Maziba, who was seen on footage that went viral on social media as he was beaten unconscious on the pitch, was in high spirits upon the club’s visit, and expressed his relief at having survived the attack that he explains “happened so fast”.

“I am grateful to be alive. Everything happened so fast, I didn’t even have time to run as the mob was too strong. I am happy that Kaizer Chiefs came to see me. It is great to see that the club cares about our well-being,” commented Maziba on Chiefs’ official website.

Motaung further lauded the duo’s bravery for putting their bodies on the line in an attempt to protect others.

“We are so glad that Sabelo and Khumbulani are convalescing well after they were senselessly beaten up on Saturday,” she added.

“We once again strongly condemn the brutal acts of criminality we witnessed. We need to understand that people like Sabelo and Khumbulani are there to look after our safety at stadiums, we need to respect and appreciate them.

“We commend them and their colleagues for standing in harm’s way when the situation was as volatile as it was on the day. It takes bravery to do what they did.”
