Platinum Stars were relegated to the National First Division after suffering a 2-1 defeat to AmaZulu on Wednesday evening.
After a quiet start to the match, Nyiko Tshabangu almost opened the scoring for Dikwena in the 14th minute with a free-kick but Usuthu goalkeeper Siyabonga Mbatha made a good save.
Luvolwethu Mpeta was unfortunate not to have found the breakthrough for Stars three minutes before the break with a low shot inside the area as Mbatha kept the visitors in the match with yet another brilliant save.
Neither side could find the net in the first stanza and they went into the break goalless.
Stars were dominant in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza but were let down by poor finishing in front of goal.
Ovidy Karuru eventually broke the deadlock for Cavin Johnson’s charges on the hour mark with a stunning diving header after connecting perfectly with Sibusiso Mabuliso’s cross into the area, 0-1.
Bonginkosi Ntuli nearly got the equaliser for Dikwena 20 minutes before time with a looping strike from just outside the box but Usuthu shot-stopper Mbatha parried his effort over the bar.
Mhlengi Cele doubled Usuthu’s lead seven minutes before time following a glorious assist from Karuru, 0-2.
Letsie Koapeng pulled a goal back for Stars two minutes before time with a header but it was too little, too late as the Phokeng side were relegated.
