Baroka boss MacDonald Makhubedu laments Gift Motupa's absence in loss to Ajax Cape Town

Baroka FC interim coach MacDonald Makhubedu admits his side missed forward Gift Motupa following their narrow defeat to Ajax Cape Town on Tuesday night.

The two sides looked to be heading towards a goalless stalemate before Mosa Lebusa’s 93rd-minute header, after a barrage of chances, snatched all three points for the hosts.

Makhubedu felt his side buckled under the Urban Warriors’ late pressure, and admits the Cape club showed they wanted the victory more.

“The last 10 minutes they came at us,” he said after the game. “We wanted to catch them on the break, but they were pumping everything inside the box, where they had really tall guys who had missed three or four free headers. And when we got the ball, we didn’t go on the break and use our counter-attacks effectively. They showed they wanted it more, and we showed a few cracks in defence in the last 10 minutes, but it was not to be, and I’m very disappointed.”

The club’s leading goal scorer Motupa, who has nine league strikes to his name, was noticeably missing from the squad, with Makhubedu lamenting his absence.

“Gift failed a late fitness test, with a back problem he had from before,” the coach said. “He was okay when he left with us from Limpopo, but had not trained with us, which was the problem. He’s a forceful player and very quick, using his pace to get behind defenders and we missed him today. But he’ll be okay by the weekend.”

The loss leaves Baroka in 10th on the Absa Premiership log, just four points clear of 15th-placed SuperSport United, who are in action against Free State Stars tonight.

Baroka will host Bloemfontein Celtic this weekend before a crunch clash away at SuperSport on the last day of the 2017/18 season on May 12.
